Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!
Psalm 46:10
Psalm 46:10 will always be a special Bible Verse to our family.
When my brother died at age 59, of a heart attack, this Bible Verse and all of Psalm 46 brought deep comfort to us.
My brother’s wife, children, their spouses, and the grandchildren, along with my parents and siblings, and myself.
We knew God was sovereign over everything, and yet we had to “be still… and know…that God is God.
For our family, it was the only way to be encouraged during that time in 2016. But it still brings hope now when we read those words again.
The Pastor, a friend of my brother and his family, based his message for the Funeral on all of Psalm 46.
Now, as I read verse 10 and then read the entire chapter, it still brings comfort to my soul today.
Along with that today marks the second anniversary of our brother-in-law’s passing, also at 59 years of age.
We cling to the words, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” And isn’t He just so?
Do you cling to those words also?
Though the earth gives way and mountains fall into the heart of the sea. Stop. Read. Digest.
Nothing shall shake us from believing God is good, and God will be the strength and portion of our hearts.
Is it so for you also?
God gives us peace and asks us to be still in the middle of losing a loved one. He reminds us He is God and we are to cling to Him through it all.
The words to Psalm 46 remind us…
“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.”
How beautiful is that picture? Our loved ones are with God, where He dwells, in heaven now, in the city of our God!
God is so powerful wars cease at His command. He is Sovereign and no other, though for a season, men may think they are.
In the end, we are to be still… and know… that HE IS GOD.
And His name is to be exalted, yes, even at a funeral. Especially at a funeral, but at all times, and throughout the earth!
So that is what we did then, and that is what we do now.
Exalt God’s name. Praise Him in the storm. Praise Him in our sorrow, and praise Him in our joy.
That, dear reader, is the purpose of this blog.
The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
And we shall exalt His holy name. Now and forevermore. He is God.
Mark these words. They are truth.
Psalm 46
1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
7 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
8 Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
11 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
