Empty Answers, Hollow Philosophies, Deceptive Teaching-

Jun 19, 2024 | Encouragement

“See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy,
which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual force of this world
 rather than on Christ.”
Colossians 2:8

It was only a dozen years ago that I was studying for my certification as a Biblical Counsellor.

One thing that got drilled into the students was Colossians 2:8.

God’s Word, the Bible, is sufficient for all our needs, and has the answers to all of life’s struggles and problems. That doesn’t mean we are never to go to a counsellor for support. It means don’t go to a secular counsellor for answers if you are a Christian. I have heard too many stories of people getting false philosophies pertaining to their life that don’t coincide with the correct theology in the life of a Christian.

That can confuse and hurt a person more.

I know of one young woman experiencing marriage struggles. Her secular counsellor advised her to get a divorce. Just like that, quit. Give up. Give no grace, no support, and no proper answers.

Another individual was “labelled” once and for all with PTSD. Just a label, no answers, and no accountability.

Often medication is the solution used to put a bandage on the problem. There is a place for medication but it should not be the first and only solution.

The list could go on and it doesn’t just apply to going to Counselling.

If you are looking for wisdom, answers, direction in life, encouragement, hope, help, a refuge, a friend, anything, find the answers in Jesus Christ and His Word.

Those who walk in the philosophies of the world, don’t walk in Christ’s ways.

In the Apostle Paul’s day there were teachers who pushed false doctrine. Empty deceptions, false truths, were drawing vulnerable individuals away from the truth in the Bible. The same is true in our day.

We must all be on guard against false teachers, seeking the LORD for discernment and truth according to His Word.

I recall in my childhood, there was a Preacher who filled in during the summers occasionally. One elder in our Church at the time questioned the accuracy of this Pastor’s preaching. Others realized the problem and soon it got dealt with at a higher level. We never heard this Pastor preach again.

This rarely happens, in my circles, but we must all be attentive to and not blind followers of what we are being taught.

“For precept must be upon precept,
precept upon precept,
Line upon line,
line upon line,
Here, a little,
there a little.”
Isaiah 28:10-13

I am thankful to be in a Church that has solid preaching and there is accountability with the ruling elders.

If you notice false theology being presented where you worship take note, do what you can to bring a stop to it, and your responsibility is to find a faithful church to attend to. That is my responsibility as well. It is all of ours.

Regardless where you go today, you will encounter false theology, vain concepts, and empty philosophies. It has always been there in Paul’s day and in our day.

Let us not fall into the empty truths this world offers.

Measure everything by God’s Word for He is faithful even when we are not.
