You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance.
Psalm 65:11
I saved one of the most delightful descriptions of harvest for the end of the month.
Can you visualize with me copious carts overflowing with abundance, golden wheat fields reaping bumper crops, and bountiful boughs overladen with teeming fruit, bursting with produce, ripe for the harvest?
I remember quite some time ago, hearing a beautiful sermon on Psalm 65 at Thanksgiving. It is a Thanksgiving Psalm.
I think it would be beneficial to read the whole chapter right now.
Psalm 65
A psalm of David.
1 Praise awaits you, our God, in Zion;
to you our vows will be fulfilled.
2 You who answer prayer, to you all people will come.
3 When we were overwhelmed by sins, you forgave[c] our transgressions.
4 Blessed are those you choose and bring near to live in your courts!
We are filled with the good things of your house, of your holy temple.
5 You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds, God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas,
6 who formed the mountains by your power, having armed yourself with strength,
7 who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations.
8 The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy.
9 You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly. The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain,
for so you have ordained it.
10 You drench its furrows and level its ridges; you soften it with showers and bless its crops.
11 You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance.
12 The grasslands of the wilderness overflow; the hills are clothed with gladness.
13 the meadows clothe themselves with flocks, the valleys deck themselves with grain,
they shout and sing together for joy.
Don’t you experience great joy as you voice these words of thanksgiving in your heart?
God fills us, He forgives us; He answers our prayers, answers us with awesome deeds. He is the hope of all the ends of the earth. God is powerful, strong, and the whole earth is filled with His wonders!
Where morning dawns, and evening fades, God calls for songs of joy!
God cares for the earth and waters it. He does this personally.
He takes the furrows, softens them and brings forth crops of abundance.
God showers us as recipients of His care, His love, and all the spiritual blessings we can imagine.
Everything overflows, drips with abundance, and decks itself with joy!
Are you filled to the brim in gratitude for this great God and King, along with me?
There is so much to be thankful for as we read the words and glance out at the world around us.
So very much to thank God for.
Our hearts can sing for joy to the one true God of the universe for all of this and then some.
