“This olive tree was cultivated and nurtured by God, but because of their
disbelief and fruitlessness, God cut off the barren branches and grafted
in wild olive’s branches — the gentiles, that we may partake in the
riches of God’s kingdom and draw the rest of the tree into fruitfulness.
Romans 11:11

Yesterday I saw something that struck me as amazing! I was out for an Appointment.

As I drove into the driveway, my eyes caught hold of an unusual sight.

There in front of me was a two coloured cherry blossom tree. Pink and white, a lovely combination of colour for the senses.

Naturally, I asked the owner if I could take some photos of this unique masterpiece of God’s creation.

As I maneuvered the vehicle away, I was thinking about how God has grafted us into His family of faith.

Our son is a landscaper and has shared the horticultural technique used to join two trees, so they become one.

As I cast my gaze upon that grafted tree, I saw beauty.

God has creatively grafted the Gentile Christians into the Family of God. That means this imagery in Romans 11 is figurative language used to help us understand His grafting Jews and Gentiles into one family. That means those who believe and receive Jesus Christ as their Savior become one united family.

The olive plant is used to represent the Israelites in the Bible. In the Old Testament times this meant the Jewish people were God’s chosen family.

Thank God for opening the door for the rest of us. Whoever believes in Jesus Christ is now part of His big, beautiful family!

As we learn in Scriptures, God’s chosen people, Israel, rejected Christ as Savior. They expected a majestic King not one born in a manger. Many clung to the security of legalism. Other Jews have received Christ as their Savior, though many have not. And so we have become one united family of God.

God promised so long ago that Abraham would be the father of many nations. That includes you and me as we believe. The promise is profound in meaning in Genesis 12:2, and other places in Genesis. Let these words sink into your soul… “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.”

Those are God’s words to our spiritual patriarchal father, Abraham. They resonate until this very day in meaning for you and me if we believe in Jesus Christ, the only way to the Father.

We belong to a great nation of believers. One day, God will gather us into our eternal home as we sing in unity by the Sea of Crystal.

That is a promise worth holding onto. The blessing of Abraham is ours, too. We belong to God’s family, and as Christians, that is our heritage. What a blessing to be part of God’s blended family. We glimpse this in the churches we attend as Christians. God has chosen us to be a part of an imperfect body of believers who rely totally on Him for grace to be united and strong.

Won’t you thank God today for grafting us together into His Family?
