Lily of the Valley

May 26, 2023 | Growing in God's Grace

“I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys.”
Song of Solomon 2:1

What do you think of when you see the Lily of the Valley tucked away in your flowerbed, or in the grassy section of the woods?

When you see this woodland flower, with sweetly scented, bell-shaped white flowers, does it remind you of the purity and perfection of Jesus, our LORD?

Do you recall with me the words to the song… “He’s the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star? He’s the greatest of ten thousand to my soul.”

We sang that song in my youth at Young People’s Group and little did many of us know the depth of meaning then.

Now, years later, the Lily of the Valley, botanically known as Convallaria Majalis, adorns our garden on the east side of the house. It spreads quickly and is a common ground cover in flowerbeds.

As believers in Jesus Christ as our Saviour, He clothes us beautifully us in the righteousness of Jesus Christ our LORD.

We want to spread His goodness assertively for God’s renown.

We are fragrant when adorned with the graces of His Spirit in us.

We thrive in the light of Christ’s love for us, His light in us, His sustenance empowering us.

The Lily of the Valley may come named as May Bells, Mary’s Tears, Eve’s Tears.

There are myths about Eve crying as she left the Garden of Eden, and her tears turned into Lily of the Valley.

However, as a Christian we don’t believe in myths but in the Word of God alone.

So as we look at the Song of Solomon, chapter two and verse one, the beautiful names given to Jesus Christ convict us.

The Son or righteousness with healing in His wings is the Rose of Sharon, the Lily of the Valley, the Bread of life, the Son of God and Son of man.

So for today, let us indulge our senses with all things spiritual when we come across the Lily of the Valley.

Drink in the beauty, the purity, the fragrance of Christ.

And remember, as we walk along life’s pathway, there is much to remind us of our perfect home in heaven.

When hardships come, let us remember our life for eternity will be in the eternal presence of the Lily of the Valley, our Jesus, the perfect one, holy and true.
