Obey God Not Men

Mar 11, 2024 | Growing in God's Grace

“But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree.
And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease
teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus.
Acts 5:29, 30, 42

The high priest, the council, the senate of the people of Israel, also known as the Sadducees, were jealous of the apostles and the influence they had in teaching the people about Jesus Christ.

They were jealous and fearful of not maintaining their own power and influence over the people and were not interested in promoting the Kingdom of God.

Have you ever had someone jealous of you? There is nothing you can do to stop their hatred of you. It just feels awful.

The apostles of Jesus were only doing what came to them through the Holy Spirit’s power. They proclaimed the name of Jesus. They preached and taught about Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

In doing so, these men got arrested and then freed. As they performed miracles in Jesus’ name and taught about salvation in Jesus Christ, the Kingdom of God advanced and the Church grew.

One lone voice in the Sanhedrin spoke up for the apostles. His name was Gamaliel. He was a prominent rabbi and had a lot of influence. (Verse 34-39) His advice was to let the men go, for if what they did was from God, it would last and they could not overthrow them. If it wasn’t from God, their deeds would dissolve and all who followed would become scattered.

Gamaliel listed two instances where men had followers and things merely dissolved. With Peter and the apostles, we know teaching Jesus Christ spread far and wide and the Church today is the result. Praise God for ever expanding His Kingdom!

The beauty of it is this ever expanding Kingdom of God, the Church, the saving grace of Jesus Christ will never end. Not then, not now, never.

Men can threaten to take lives. They can even take lives, but true believers will carry on in the name of Jesus and teach the name of Jesus, obeying God and not man. Many have given their lives for the lives of others who will come to know Jesus and receive the gift of salvation.

Others will give their lives to stop the voices of those obeying God, teaching and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.

This has gone on since Jesus gave the directive, the great commission,
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 28:19-20.

It is only through the power of the Holy Spirit that the gospel has, can, and always will continue on. No one can stop, quench, or throw a wrench into what the Holy Spirit does through mere men, and especially through mere men filled with the Spirit of God who wrote the gospel. We as believers are containers of the Holy Spirit, conduits of the message of the gospel. Nothing can quench the Holy Spirit. Not one thing.

Let us endeavour to obey God and not man all the days we have breath given us and an opportunity to share the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ the only way to be saved.
