Perfect Gifts

Jul 2, 2024 | Delighting in God

Every good and perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,
who does not change like shifting shadows.
He chose to give us birth through the word of truth,
that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.
James 1:17-18

Good morning dear reader.

How was your long weekend?

Did you experience God’s goodness to you in the last while?

I certainly hope so.

A few days ago we read James, chapter one. There are enough nuggets of truth to hold on to there for a lifetime. The book of James would make an exceptional study for sure and for certain.

So how did you experience God’s excellent gifts in the last while, or did you even notice them in your life?

In our family, we celebrated two birthdays, always a cause to be grateful. God has given us the gift of life and as Christians, we recognize He gave us birth through the word of God, the Bible. That alone is reason to be thankful all the days of our lives.

As James one verse 18 also states, we are a kind of “firstfruits” of all God created. This simply means God created human beings first and we are His treasure. In the Bible all the “first-fruits” were consecrated to God. Christ is before us naturally, but as humans we are to represent Jesus in all we do and say. What a high calling this is and only remotely possible by the blood of Christ and His grace in our lives.

As Christians, we are to dedicate our lives, devote ourselves and remain “set apart” for God’s use all our days. This gives us purpose and meaning as we seek to live separately from the world in the way we live.

Our son went on a fishing excursion on the lake yesterday. A professional who takes chartered expeditions on the water led it. Unfortunately, his language left something to be desired. This is only one example of how we can remain “separate” from the world as we seek to honour God with our speech. There are a million different ways to live apart from the rest of the world. As a Christian, you know them and I don’t need to spell it out. Right?

So let us go back to the idea of God’s splendid gifts.

If you struggle to see the “goodness of God” in your life, may I suggest going for a walk in God’s beautiful creation?

Just yesterday, I walked around the gardens on our lawn. We had just come home and amazing fresh growth once dormant had sprung to life. The lilies behold the glory of God, their beautiful faces reminding us not to worry. Hummingbirds flittered around their speed, nearly resisting the laws of physics, flapping their wings 90 times per second.

Thank-you Lord for your perfect and lovely gifts for those who have eyes to see.

Gifts of life, family, beauty, bounty, and breathtaking in abundance.

Breath in God’s goodness today with me, and let us thank Him for His good, and grace-filled gifts.

If you can’t be thankful for His kindness, please ask Him for eyes to see?

May you have a good day as we begin anew the routines of a fresh week.

Liz
