River of Life

Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said,
‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’
Now this he said about the Spirit,
whom those who believed in him were to receive,
for as yet the Spirit had not been given,
because Jesus was not yet glorified.
John 7:38-39

When an individual believes in Jesus as their Saviour and LORD, that person will have a heart that overflows with the living water of the Holy Spirit within.

These promises are of great comfort and encouragement.

This person will gravitate towards seeking spiritual blessing rather than earthly blessings in this life. Nothing else can satisfy the soul as Christ does.

The Holy Spirit within provides sanctifying and comforting influences.

These spiritual blessings flow like a river in the soul.

Nothing can stop the flow.

The current is swift, and the river flows sure.

The amount of sediments or a steep or uncertain terrain affects the flow of the river. The current can weaken and sometimes the water forms a cesspool and becomes stagnant.

When the believer returns to the throne of grace, he or she becomes filled again with this living water.

Recently I experienced great joy in biking twenty-two kilometres along the Niagara Parkway.

Beside me flowed a river that ran the entire time.

It served as a reminder of the living water that flows within the heart of a believer.

Rhythmically, bringing beauty and peace, that river carried the water, refreshing to behold.

And somehow it filled the senses with a greater river within.

The river of life, the flow of the Holy Spirit in the heart and soul.

To those beaten down by life and circumstances, breath in this life-giving source of living water.

For those just coasting along in a whirlpool of boredom, drink in the life-giving water.

For all of us, everyone, may we seek the source of this life giving water and ask Him to fill us again and again and again.

The Holy Spirit does its work and fills us to overflowing with the streams that flow from our glorified Saviour.

When we replenished to overflowing with life giving water, seek to make known these streams that flow on and on to the ends of the earth. We long to share the life giving refreshment to those who are dry and weary in a land where there is no water.

Drink in deeply of this spring of living water and refresh your weary soul.

And one day when hardships end, and life is over, we will drink of that everlasting stream of living water for all eternity.
