Son of the Most High

“But the angel said to her,
“Do not be afraid, Mary;
you have found favour with God.
You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.”
(Luke 1:30-32)

I have wondered what Mary’s life looked like before she was given news that she would give birth to the Saviour of the world.

We don’t know too much about her except that she was an ordinary Jewish maiden betrothed to a man named Joseph.

And she found favour with God. Her life was exemplary. She was a godly woman. And God chose her to be the mother of Christ, the King of all Creation!

What an honour. She was humble too, as she pondered these things in her heart and believed God’s promises! She could have doubted, she could have run away in fear or doubt. But she pondered and believed God. Then she followed through with God’s call on her life with faith.

Joseph and Mary named Him Jesus, and they raised Him in the fear of the LORD.

Of all the purposes of serving God, this one was the ultimate earthly calling next to that of our LORD Jesus Christ.

And yet we are not to worship Joseph or Mary, only to admire their courage and faith.

Christ is the one we worship, the one who delivered the one who delivered Him, and all who do believe.

Meditate on the words of the contemporary hymn with me:

“Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has come to make you new?
This child that you delivered will soon deliver you.
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will calm the storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little baby
You kiss the face of God…
The blind will see, the deaf will hear
The dead will live again
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak
The praises of the Lamb.
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy
Is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you’re holding is the great,
I AM!

What an astounding song. The lyrics are amazing and we sing with all our hearts in praise to Heaven’s perfect Lamb, the great I AM!

And though Mary had the honour to birth the King of Kings, she also stood by the cross in sorrow as He gave His life as a ransom for many.

By faith, she watched and didn’t run away in fear.

She must have known without a single doubt that the wounds that pierced her son,

would bring many believers to glory.

God uses His people in big and small ways.

As we believe in Him.

So let us boast in Jesus Christ, His birth, His life, His resurrection.

And trust God’s promises as His humble servant Mary did so long ago, so far away, and still is ours today.
