“I see him, but not now;
I behold him,
but not near.
A star will come out of Jacob;
a scepter will rise out of Israel.”
There are many things that amaze me about God’s Word, here is one of them! Already in the Old Testament, in the book of Numbers, we have a prophecy of the coming Messiah. There are prophecies all throughout the Old Testament, beginning in Genesis that foretell our Christ Jesus’s coming!
One day I would like to do a study about that. What about you? It would be complex, but worth every minute. Learning more about the promises of the coming Messiah. What more blessed teaching could we hope to sit under?
Do you wonder, as I do, how many prophecies there actually are? Yesterday on Google I read there are over 350. But I don’t always believe what Google says, so I am seeking an accurate source. If you know one, let us know in the comments?
In Numbers 24:17 the Spirit of God influences Balaam, a wicked man, to foretell the coming of Jesus Christ! Many have heard God’s Words but do not obey them. They do not listen for God’s voice in them. Balaam was such a man. The truth of the matter is God can use anyone for His own purposes.
Many men and women may be educated in worldly things but empty of the grace of God. Knowing of Christ but never knowing Christ as a personal Saviour, Redeemer, and Friend of all friends. Those who believe Christ as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords bow the knee in humble submission. And one day soon every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is LORD! (Philippians 2:10-11)
Even the most eloquent speaker can be devoid of all belief in Christ the King. Words become meaningless. Phrases become puffed up with pride, devoid of depth and riches.
The most simple may come in humble dependence believing in the Redeemers work in coming to the world as Immanuel, God and man, God with us now and always. Let the weak say I am strong in the LORD, in His atoning blood for me. Born in a manger, died on a cross, beautiful Saviour, my gain was your loss.
This Christ child, Immanuel, God with us, makes life bearable when even the most painful things happen. Immanuel, He lives on the inside of believers. He knows what is going on for us on the outside. He is with us, Immanuel. His Spirit lives within us, guiding us and giving us hope.
This Messiah prophesied of long ago. He is real, and He is near. For those who believe we know it without a doubt and nothing, absolutely nothing, can strip us of this hope.
Immanuel. Christ Child, Sovereign God, Holy Spirit within, Triune God. He is real now and always.
In humble adoration we will bow the knee to this King, to the only true King, to our Immanuel, God with us. Now and forevermore.
Let us fill our hearts with the star of Israel, the scepter of Jacob, Jesus, our Messiah, today and always.
