Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying,
“I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness,
but will have the Light of life.”
John 8:12
Jesus had been on the Mount of Olives and as dawn broke forth, He appeared again in the temple courts.
Many people gathered around Jesus, and he taught them.
The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery.
They tried to trick Jesus, asking, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now, what do you say?”
But Jesus replied, “Let any among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”
One by one, the people left the temple until only Jesus and the woman remained.
Jesus asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
“No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave you life of sin.”
This is the setting for the Bible Verse for today from John 8 verse 12.
It does not give a license to sin, but it gives mercy for sin.
Jesus did not condemn the woman, but gently asked her to leave her life of sin.
He does the same for us now.
We can flounder in our sin, fail in our walk of faith, or live a life totally lost in sin with no awareness of the light offering life Jesus gives until our eyes see for themselves the light of life, the mercy giver.
Only Jesus can open our eyes to see the light of life! He may use people to bring truth to us, but in the end it is Jesus who works by His Word, and His Spirit to bring truth.
Imagine no one had ever told you the truth from lies.
Then Jesus, the truth bearer, comes along with life saving words:
Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying,
“I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness,
but will have the Light of life.”
The truth of the matter is our lives are empty and meaningless without Jesus, the light giver.
Can you remember days when your faith is weak and you feel as if you are walking in the dark?
Some phases of life are like that.
That is when we need to return our hearts to the Word of God.
He shines His light into our empty hearts, and we are alive again!
As we stumble through the dark trials of life, we need to cling to Jesus.
The light of life shines His radiance into our souls only as we seek Him with our whole heart!
They say the eyes reflect the soul.
I believe there is much truth in that statement.
Have you looked into people’s eyes and seen evil?
Angry eyes empty of any compassion?
Or perhaps eyes that look dull, devoid of any feeling?
And then the other side of the coin, eyes full of vibrancy, laughter, and joy!
Eyes that pop with the light of life!
Perhaps today is a good day to ask Jesus to shine the flashlight of His love and living Spirit into our heart and soul again so that our eyes might shine with joy and bring light to the one who is needs it today.
