The Peace Only Jesus Brings

Dec 5, 2023 | Encouragement

Peace, I leave with you;
my peace, I give you.
I do not give to you as the world gives.
Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
John 14:27

As you read the entire chapter of John 14, you realize the comfort Jesus is extending to His disciples as he prepares to leave this world. Jesus is preparing them for His departure, but He promises them (and us) to send the Holy Spirit to be with them (us) and guide them (us) and empower them (us)!

There are so many important details in John 14 that I encourage you to read the entire chapter right now.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6). This verse is at the heart of the Christian faith. It is written…clearly in black and white here. God will save no one except through Jesus Christ.

Another beautiful facet of John 14 is the exhortation not to let our hearts be troubled. Jesus promises to prepare a place for us in His Father’s house. Think of it: heaven has many rooms. Jesus has prepared a one just for us. A more beautiful home you have never seen. Remember the most elaborate motel you have ever stayed at? It won’t compare to the rooms in heaven. Won’t even touch it with the exquisite design our permanent home will have. Nothing we imagine can fathom the greatness of that eternal home.

Why do we let our hearts get weighed down by the troubles of this world? We are human and that is why. But as we look to Jesus, the captain of our faith, we get a picture of the one who brought us the peace that passes understanding.

Even in this messed up world, we can have peace. But we don’t have peace always, do we?

We ruminate on the worst-case scenario type of things that can happen. Or perhaps those things have actually happened. In either case as we turn our face upon Jesus and look full in His wonderful face, we experience peace. As long as we keep our focus on Jesus. There, in His presence, we find peace. But oh so quickly we turn, we turn, we turn. Just as the apostle Peter sank as he walked on the water, our hearts sink in the cares of this harsh world. We lose faith as soon as we turn from Jesus. Our peace is gone, and we are worried.

How we need to meditate on the Words of Jesus from John 14:27:

“Peace, I leave with you;
my peace, I give you.
I do not give to you as the world gives.
Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Let us cling to these words today.

Jesus came into the world to be our peace.

Born in a stable.

Raised as an ordinary Jew.

Born to die on the cross as our heavenly Father planned so long ago.

Born so He could reconcile sinners to God.

Born that man, no more would die.

Born to give us second birth.

The peace of Jesus is different.

It is true peace.

The peace our souls need until we meet our maker and then forevermore.
